We are pleased to announce the return of Oxford, Mississippi's annual tournament, As I Layout Dying. The tournament will take place on April 26 and 27 on the Ole Miss intramural fields. Come party with us for Oxford's Double Decker weekend and enjoy a weekend of playing Ultimate and drinking. This will be a club open tournament, but mixed player is highly encouraged and mixed teams will have a cheaper bid fee. The bid fee, which is still to be determined, will most likely be around $50-75. Players can either register by team or as free agents. If there are enough free agents to combine to form a team, there will be a free agent team. Otherwise, they will be added to existing teams that need some players. Check out the tournament site here.

Press Release

For Immediate Release

Local High School Senior Invited to try out for Jr. National Ultimate Frisbee Team
Madison Central senior, Amit Tzivion, has been selected to try out for the Junior National team that will represent the United States in the 2012 World Junior Ultimate Frisbee Championships held in Dublin, Ireland from August 12-18, 2012.

The sport of Ultimate Frisbee is a hybrid between football and basketball which is played with teams of seven and a disc. Teams move the frisbee towards an end-zone on a football-sized field, but players are not allowed to run with the disc in their hands. Simple rules for Ultimate and places to play around Mississippi can be found at http://get.to/simplerules

The sport is fast-growing in the state with teams from several cities, colleges and high schools participating. Tzivion started a club at Madison Central to organize players and challenge teams from other high schools from around the region. The team, called the “Slo Bros”, won the Mississippi High School Championship last year and look to do the same this year. Additional information about the High School State Tournament can be found at http://mississippiultimate.com

On the weekend of March 13th, Amit will travel to Chapel Hill, North Carolina to compete with forty other high school students at the tryout for one of twenty-six spots. Once the team is selected the players will enter a one week training camp prior to traveling to the tournament in Dublin, Ireland. When asked about the opportunity Tzivion said, “I’m really excited about the tryouts. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity and a great honor to have the chance to represent my country at the World Junior Ultimate Championships and compete at the highest level of Ultimate, even if I don’t end up making the team.”

Ultimate in 10 Simple Rules

The Field: A rectangular shape with end zones at each end. A regulation field is 70 yards by 40 yards, with end zones 25 yards deep.

Initiate Play: Each point begins with both teams lining up on the front of their respective end zone line. The defense throws ("pulls") the disc to the offense. A regulation game has seven players per team.

Scoring: Each time the offense completes a pass in the defense's end zone, the offense scores a point. Play is initiated after each score.

Movement of the Disc: The disc may be advanced in any direction by completing a pass to a teammate. Players may not run with the disc. The person with the disc ("thrower") has ten seconds to throw the disc. The defender guarding the thrower ("marker") counts out the stall count.

Change of Possession: When a pass is not completed (e.g. out of bounds, drop, block, interception), the defense immediately takes possession of the disc and becomes the offense.

Substitutions: Players not in the game may replace players in the game after a score and during an injury timeout.

Non-contact: No physical contact is allowed between players. Picks and screens are also prohibited. A foul occurs when contact is made.

Fouls: When a player initiates contact on another player a foul occurs. When a foul disrupts possession, the play resumes as if the possession was retained. If the player committing the foul disagrees with the foul call, the play is redone.

Self-Officiating: Players are responsible for their own foul and line calls. Players resolve their own disputes.

Spirit of the Game: Ultimate stresses sportsmanship and fair play. Competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of respect between players, adherence to the rules, and the basic joy of play.

More deatiled rules of play can be found at: http://www.usaultimate.org/resources/officiating/rules/default.aspx

Deep Fried

Deep Fried will be fielding a competitive Open team as well as a Mixed team so we have an offering for individuals of varying sex and commitment level. The open team will be driven and will compete on the highest level. Our co-captains of the Open team are John Clemmer and Eli Rhodes, and we plan on taking a bid to Regionals.

We will be holding intense practices twice a week in Jackson and will have the ability to play as a group and truly learn how each member of the team plays. We are working to implement a system where play time will not have to do with who you know and how well you know them but how much you can commit to the team.

Where: Milsaps
When: Saturday, May 7 2011 10am
Bring: Water, Lunch, A White Top, A Black Top.

Respond to Baskin Jones, baskinjones@yahoo.com if you plan to attend or want more info about the team.
